POLICE have charged a man after he threatened a shopkeeper with a 'homemade weapon' before making off with money from the till.
The armed robbery took place in South Tyneside earlier this week.
The incident happened at about 8pm on Tuesday, July 9, after police received a report that a man had entered the Betfred store on Ellison Street, Jarrow.
Carrying what was described as a homemade weapon, a man threatened the shopkeeper and demanded she empty the contents of the till, before making off with a quantity of cash.
The shopkeeper was left shaken but uninjured during the incident.
An investigation was launched and police have now charged Anthony Patterson, 35, of no fixed address, with robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.
He is due to appear before magistrates in South Tyneside this morning.
