Jury considers verdict into death of 17-year-old at secure children's home in Newton Aycliffe

Crook Coroner's Court has been holding the inquiry into the death of Taylor Alice Williams, who was living at Aycliffe Secure Centre, in Newton Aycliffe, when she died on February 18, 2017.

Jurors have heard seven days of evidence about Taylor's circumstances and the events that preceded her death.

Described as "vulnerable and troubled", as well as "very intelligent", with "bags of personality", the teenager had been living at the secure children's home since July 2016.

Jurors, who visited the centre last week, have heard from a number of social workers, medical staff and others who were involved in her care.

They have also been given extracts from her diary, as well as things she had written prior to her death.

The inquest has heard Taylor, who had been taken into care by Worcestershire County Council in 2014, had a history of self-harming and had been hospitalised on a number of occasions.

On the day of her death, staff at the centre were checking her every five minutes. She had gone to her bedroom at about 1pm, saying she was tired. The alarm was raised when she was found unconscious in her bed, at about 4.40pm, with a ligature around her neck.
