ROMANS will invade the region this weekend.

Binchester Roman Fort’s annual festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, offering visitors the chance to find out what life was really like for Romans living in County Durham.

Cavalryman Barbaratus and colleagues from the Roma Antiqua re-enactment group will demonstrate archery and slingstaff techniques and show how a ballista artillery catapult works.

The event, organised by Durham County Council’s archaeology team with support from Northern Archaeological Associates, will also offer visitors the chance to inspect weapons, armour and equipment and visit the stalls of civilian traders and artisans.

A guided tour of the site will showcase the size and importance of Vinovia and its well-preserved buildings. A new excavation at the north east gate of the fort will also be open.

Entry to the festival is £7 for adults, £6 for concessions and £4 for children, under fours go free.
