A MAN has been taken to hospital after being rescued from a fire in Darlington.

Fire crews were called to a home in the Carmel area of town at around 6.30am on Monday following a fire which was believed to have started in the kitchen.

Three fire engines attended the scene, from Newton Aycliffe, Darlington and Bishop Auckland, as well as police and heart teams.

A spokesperson from Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call to a house fire in the Carmel area at 6:32am.

"One adult male was rescued and taken to hospital. The heart team and police were in attendance.

"The fire was on the ground floor in the kitchen, firefighters used 4 breathing apparatus, 2 hose reels and stage 3 positive pressure ventilation.

"The stop call was received at 9:23am."

The incident is under investigation.
