THOUSANDS of people got the chance to find out more about the work of real-life superheroes at a free family fun day at the weekend.

The PCVC Celebration of Local Superheroes, hosted by Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Hogg, at Locomotion, in Shildon, featured a host of activities.

Mr Hogg said: “This annual event is now a firm family favourite. I brought the event forward to the summer period in the hope of good weather.

“A lot of the work organisations do is hidden so this is a great way for us to show the hidden things which they do."

The event included familiar faces from the emergency services including, the police, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Service, Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue, Jet and Ben, Bloodbikes along with many local community and voluntary organisations.

Members of the public had the opportunity to get involved with various interactive activities.

One of the highlights of the day was fancy dress competition, with children invited to come as their favourite character, local superhero, or wearing any of their favourite outfits.

The Durham Police cadets competed throughout the day to be crowned the winners of the Ron Hogg Cadet Cup.
