A THEATRE is launching a 'buddy' system which will see volunteers acting as companions for people reluctant to attend shows on their own.

The Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, will launch the scheme in time for its new autumn season of performances.

Theatre chief executive Clare Allen said: "Our front of house manager, Paul Gilpin, has been made aware there are some audience members who would love to come to see shows, but are reluctant to be at the theatre on their own.

"With the support of our volunteers, the Georgian Theatre Royal has launched a free companion service for such audience members.

"If someone would rather have company while at the theatre, we will buddy them up with a volunteer. The buddy volunteer will meet them at the theatre, help collect their tickets, acquaint them with the theatre’s facilities and show them to their seats.

" The volunteer will then sit with them during the performance and stay with them until they have been collected from the theatre or are safely on their way home after the performance. The buddy volunteer is not a carer or to be responsible for any medical needs, but simply a companion for the audience member’s visit to the theatre. "

The brochure detailing the theatre's upcoming shows for the autumn season will be distributed in mid-June and any show can be seen with a buddy.
