Which ‘Job of the Future’ is your favourite?

LAST month we launched a fantastic competition in local primary schools with a great prize for the winning school.

Three successful County Durham advocates created a video which was shown in schools to encourage children to see the region as a vibrant and exciting place to live and work in the future.

As part of the ‘My Future is Durham’ campaign, students from years 4, 5 and 6 were challenged to create imaginative adverts for ‘Jobs of the Future’, making them as inventive as they wanted - thinking about what jobs in the future may look like, what companies will need to offer to attract staff, and what skills people will need to do the job.

A judging panel from Durham County Council looked at all the brilliant entries and selected a shortlist of four of the best, which are reproduced here.

Cllr Olwyn Gunn, said: “I was delighted to be asked to judge this competition, which ties in with all of the work we do as a council, to make our county a great place for children to grow and thrive.

"The children taking part have put a lot of effort into researching the world of work and that really shows in the quality of the entries as well as the ingenuity of some jobs they have created. It is encouraging to see that our campaign has inspired local children about creating a thriving and prosperous career here in county Durham.”

Now you have the chance to take part in a public vote to choose the one you think should be the overall winner.

The winning school will be able to nominate twenty-five lucky pupils to enjoy a visit to the Hitachi factory in Newton Aycliffe - a centre of engineering excellence in County Durham, and home to LNER’s new Azuma train.

Fay Biddlecombe, Education Development Advisor at Durham County Council said: “It was a real pleasure to see how imaginative the children had been when they were coming up with their job descriptions of the future. The creativity was excellent and there was such a broad range of jobs.

"It was eye-opening to see what these children really value in the workplace, like time off at a weekend, flexible working patterns, financial rewards, and the chance to make people happy.”
