SOME residents evacuated from a huge fire at a neighbouring derelict hotel last week are unlikely to be able to return home until the end of the week.

Residents living next to the site are still in hotels or with relatives following the blaze at the former Marton Hotel and Country Club in Middlesbrough, while those living on The Grove, a little further away from the building, have been able to return.

The site has been secured and demolition work is under way.

Residents are being regularly updated and will be supported to return to their homes as soon as possible.

The fire is being investigated as arson.

The Northern Echo:

The blaze at its height

They have been warned that some areas of the building involved in the fire contained asbestos and it is possible that some of this material may have been released in the smoke and deposited in ash or debris nearby, but the risk is minimal.

Middlesbrough Council said it was continuing to assess the situation and a clean-up of the local area is under way.

If residents do find ash or debris from the fire on their property, they are advised to leave it alone and to contact the local authority on 01642 726001/726050 so that clean-up can be arranged.
