THE fire which gutted a derelict hotel and country club overnight is being investigated as arson, fire crews have confirmed.

The blaze at the former Marton Hotel and Country Club in Middlesbrough broke out just before 7pm.

Twelve fire engines were called to the scene and crews have been battling the huge blaze, with plumes of smoke which could be seen for miles around, all night.

About 30 nearby houses were evacuated, on both Stokesley Road and The Grove, with some residents provided with temporary accommodation by Middlesbrough Council.

Residents from The Grove are now able to return to their homes but only to collect their belongings, a police spokeswoman said.

Two engines and an aerial rescue pump remain at the scene this morning damping down and ensuring no gas pipes are ruptured.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesman said: "The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate and police are investigating."

Commuters were facing disruption this morning as roads remained closed in the immediate area.

Police said the A172 Middlesbrough to Stokesley road remains closed - so anyone wanting to get into Middlesbrough from Nunthorpe should seek alternative routes.
