A CAMPAIGN to encouraging people to shop at their local markets is being backed by Hambleton District Council.

Stall holders on markets in Northallerton and Thirsk which are run by the district council are taking part in the National Association of British Market Authorities ‘love your local market’ scheme.

The campaign recognises the importance of markets and aims to help them adapt to ensure they can continue to thrive.

Adam Jackson who owns a local plant nursery and has been trading at Northallerton market for the last ten years said people are a lot more selective now than when he started a decade ago.

"They are looking for quality but all my customers are lovely, the eldest customer is 101. They appreciate my knowledge and honesty on what plants are suitable for them. I enjoy working Northallerton market and feel part of a team," he added.

Deputy Council Leader, Councillor Peter Wilkinson said: "This campaign celebrates small businesses at the heart of our communities. Our fabulous markets are important contributors to making our towns vibrant and we are keen to ensure they remain a key element of our town experience for residents and visitors alike."

This year’s theme is ‘Markets: Close to Your Heart’ and the aim is to encourage people in the towns and surrounding areas to rediscover them for themselves. Northallerton market operates on Wednesday and Saturday and Thirsk market on Saturday and Monday including Bank Holidays.
