A CELEBRATION of the North-East’s noisiest daughters will see performers take to the stage as the region’s first all-female compilation album is launched this week.

On Friday, Darlington’s Voodoo Café will come alive with the talents and sounds of female-led acts as the much-anticipated Noisy Daughters EP is released.

The album launch is the latest move in a long-running campaign led by music collective Tracks, who aim to boost gender equality within the music industry.

Their recent efforts were inspired by research that showed out of 600 popular songs released between 2012 and 2017, just 22 per cent were performed by women – and only 12 per cent written by them.

Tracks’ Sarah Wilson said: “Sadly there are still many issues around achieving equality in music, as a female musician and promoter I see this all the time.

“Through Noisy Daughters we hope to contribute to the change in our musical landscape and hopefully highlight and support female artists where we can.”

In a bid to showcase the skills and diversity of the region’s female musicians, the collective curated the Noisy Daughters 12” vinyl in conjunction with local record label Butterfly Effect and the BBC’s Rianne Thompson.

It features artists drawn from across the North-East, including Darlington’s “urban pop queen” Eve Conway and Middlesbrough’s GGAllan Partridge.

Noise punks Blom, experimental electronic producer Jennifer Walton, Redcar acoustic duo Komparrison, Martha Hill and guitarist Girl from Winter Jargon also grace the tracklist, along with Newcastle hip-hop artist Kay Greyson and singer songwriter Zararuth.

Stephen Gill, from Butterfly Effect, said: “It was important that we selected artists who showcased the incredible diversity of female artists in the North East.

“It would have been all too easy to feature a host of acoustic female vocalists playing songs about love, but it was important to us to provide a platform for the cutting edge genre pushers out there whose voice is perhaps not heard as loudly as more mainstream musicians.”

The launch party will feature performances by a selection of the artists highlighted on the album release and will take place from 7.30pm. The first 50 audience members will receive a bottle of Noisy Daughters beer created by Saints Row Brewing Co.

Tickets are £5 or £15 including a copy of the album. All proceeds will go towards funding workshops and other events as part of the Noisy Daughters initiative. To book or for more information, visit tracksdarlington.co.uk
