A WARNING has been issued over the potential danger of starting small fires in woodland near residential areas.
Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) delivered the safety message after recent incidents where crews have been called to attend woodland near Sheraton Park, in Nevilles Cross, Durham.
A spokesman said: “We’ve been informed of several fires which are believed to have been deliberately started in the wooded area in Sheraton Park.
“Crews from Durham Station were called out to extinguish the latest fire on Tuesday, at 5.35pm.
“The CDDFRS arson reduction team is working with Durham Constabulary to monitor areas we have been having these fires.
“The fires occurred very close to properties in the area, and they could easily spread and get out of control, making them extremely dangerous.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact FIRESTOPPERS, on 0800-169 5558.
Meanwhile, the service confirmed, following investigation into a weekend house fire, on Margaret Street, Ludworth, near Durham, the cause was electrical and not a criminal act.
No-one was injured and residents were thanked for their, “co-operation and understanding.”
