A LARGE fire which badly damaged a car parts garage was brought under control today.

The blaze broke out at Wrightway Car Parts, in West Boldon, South Tyneside, at about 8.20pm last night.

Within a short time a series of blasts were heard, as gas canisters in the premises are believed to have exploded, while huge plumes of smoke could be seen from some distance.

It led to a huge turn out of firefighters and vehicles with, at its height, nine appliances in attendance from across the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service area.

Three neighbouring homes and the Red Lion pub, also in the vicinity, were evacuated and part of Rectory Terrace and adjoining Gateshead Terrace were closed to traffic.

The fire was fought through the night, but by daylight today only a single crew was required to remain at the scene to continue the dampening down process.

There were no reports of any injuries during the fire-fighting operation.

It is not known what caused the blaze, but inquiries will be continuing between the fire service and Northumbria Police today.
