MOTORISTS heading north for the Bank Holiday weekend have been warned to expect disruption on the road network around Berwick.

The annual Riding of the Bounds event is taking place in the Berwick area today.(Saturday, May 4)

The historic event involves the cavalcade of horses ridden to mark the boundary between England and Scotland.

The horses are ridden around the town centre, then out of town on a 15 mile route, before returning.

As such, Northumbria Police warn, there will be some disruption to the road network and rolling road closures will be in place to allow the safe movement of the horses between 10am and 4pm.

Roads will be re-opened as horses and riders pass through.

The main times for traffic congestion in the town centre, is as the cavalcade leaves and later as it re-enters the town.

All road users in the area are asked to take extra time for their travel and where possible use alternate routes.

During the event there is also a fair with a variety of stalls and refreshments.

Full road closures and disruptions can be seen here.
