A COURSE that uses local archives to help the public discover their family history will start this month.

Durham County Record Office is inviting people to learn new skills and make use of the rich archive.

Led by an archivist, the three sessions will teach attendees about different types of useful historical documents and how best to access materials for research.

Dawn Layland, education and outreach archivist at Durham County Record Office said: “May is Local and Community History month, encouraging people to find out more about the history that surrounds them.

“Previous participants in our course have told us that it is an ideal starting point, and that having an archivist to support them along the way is a huge help.

“Knowing how to use the archives can lead to some fascinating discoveries for people about their past.”

The course runs on Tuesday evenings from 6pm-8pm on May 7, 14 and 21. Places costing £30 must be booked in advance. For more information call 03000 267626 or email record.office@durham.gov.uk
