THERE was no doubting the 'mane' attraction at an open air museum at the weekend.

That's after Beamish Museum, near Stanley, County Durham, hosted an equine extravaganza.

Around 50 horses took part in the event, called Horses at Work, which was held to celebrate the important role that working horses played when the country returned to peace time following the upheaval of the First World War.

It was part of the Great North Festival of Transport.

A variety of horses were on show including carriage horses, pit ponies and heavy ponies ranging from Irish Draughts to Friesians as well as Shires and Clydesdales.

Visitors flocked to the museum to see the animals in action with a parade each day, as well as opportunities to take a trip on a variety of horse-drawn vehicles, including two late 1800s London omnibuses, watch displays, meeting the pit ponies and take part in fun, family activities.
