OXFORD will 'stand together in solidarity' today in the aftermath of the Sri Lanka bombings.

A wave of six blasts went off almost simultaneously at three churches and three hotels on Easter Sunday yesterday, followed by a further two explosions at a guesthouse in Dehiwala and near an overpass at Dematagoda.

The terrorist attacks, most of which are suspected suicide attacks, killed at least 290 people and injured 500, including eight Britons.

Oxford Islamic Information Centre has organised a vigil outside HSBC in Carfax from 5.30pm today, and people are welcome to attend and bring flowers and candles.

A Facebook event for the vigil, created by Oxford city councillor Lubna Arshad, states: "Oxford has over 300 residents who were born or have ties to Sri Lanka.

"For this reason please come join us as a mark of respect for those who have died, injured and a nation who is in shock.

"Terror attacks such as these seek to cause division amongst communities, let us stand together in solidarity."

Many Oxfordshire churches prayed for the victims and their families during Easter Sunday services yesterday.

Trinity Church in Abingdon, which was among them, posted on Facebook: "We prayed for our sisters and brothers in Sri Lanka after the heartbreaking atrocity there and for our brothers and sisters of ALL faiths who are persecuted throughout the world."

Oxford East MP Anneliese Dodds has branded the attacks 'appalling.'
