THE A1M southbound in North Yorkshire has ropened following its closure for several hours after a 'serious road collision' took place earlier today.

At around 7.40am on Saturday (April 13) the emergency services were called to reports of a collision and overturned vehicle in between junction's 50 and 51 close to Leeming Bar services, near Bedale.

A spokesperson for Highways England said the road was expected to remain closed until at least 12pm.

They said: "Closure is likely to remain on for a few hours yet whilst police deal at scene."

At around 9am, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Bedale, Ripon and Northallerton had been deployed and were in attendance.

At 11am North Yorkshire Police said a diversion for motorists was still in place and that the southbound carriageway was expected to remain closed for several hours.

In the afternoon, Highways England confirmed the road had reopened at 2pm, but said motorists were still being advised of residual delays.
