A DAUGHTER has appeared before a judge charged with murdering her 73-year-old mother.

Odessa Carey, 35, was before Newcastle Crown Court for a brief hearing via a videolink from Low Newton prison, charged with murdering her mother who had the same name.

The defendant, of no fixed abode, was remanded in custody to appear before the same court on May 9 for a plea hearing.

John Elvidge QC, defending, did not apply for bail.

A trial date was provisionally set for October 2.

Judge Paul Sloan QC told the defendant: "You will be remanded in custody.

"I anticipate your legal team will be through to see you at Low Newton before May 9."

The body of Odessa Carey senior was found at an address in Links View, Ashington, Northumberland, on Monday.

Her daughter is charged with murdering her between April 3 and April 8.
