A MAN who disrupted train services by climbing onto the ledge of a bridge has appeared in court.

Cameron McKenna admitted a charge of obstructing an engine or a carriage using a railway and will return to Teesside Crown Court next month to be sentenced.

His lawyer Ben Pegman asked for a psychiatric report to be prepared on the 23-year-old before the next hearing on May 17.

McKenna, of Elmfield Street, Darlington, was given bail, but warned he could still face a prison sentence.

British Transport Police investigated the incident at Darlington railway station on February 13 last year, and looked at possible other offences.

Prosecutor Jane Foley told Judge Deborah Sherwin that no further charges have been brought in 14 months, which the judge described as "bizarre".

Judge Sherwin said: "It is obviously not Mr McKenna's fault if British Transport Police have not done anything about getting their act together.

She told McKenna: "The reason I am adjourning is not to give you any kind of promise as to what the sentence will be, but the court needs to know more about you, particularly your psychiatric history."

Mr Pegman said: "He is still under psychiatric services at West Park Hospital, and he tells me he is a lot more positive."
