A JUNIOR event for young athletes is up and running on Sunday mornings.

The 2k Parkrun event is held at Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street at 9am and is for children aged between four and 14 years old.

They are open to all, free of charge, and are easy and safe to take part in.

Allyson Rose, project officer with Chester-le-Street and District Area Action Partnership, said: “Councillors from across the partnership area were thrilled to support such a venture and contributed an allocation of their yearly Neighbourhood Budget fund to support the set-up of the Chester-le-Street Junior Parkrun to operate out of Riverside Park.

“Since the first run, over seven weeks ago, the numbers have swelled so much that it has one of the best attended in the North East and Yorkshire, with over 100 runners who have never ran before and are now running regularly. It is a fantastic achievement and this has been developed to complement the highly successful Riverside Parkrun taking place on a Saturday.”
