TWO people - a man and a woman - suffered critical injuries in a car accident on Monday, police have confirmed.

Police are appealing for witnesses tp the incident which involved a black Volkswagen T-Roc travelling from School Aycliffe towards Horndale Avenue in Newton Aycliffe.

On reaching the mini roundabout junction, for reasons yet to be determined, the vehicle continued straight over the junction and collided with a tree just after 9.35am.

Paramedics from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) and firefighters were also called to the scene.

A spokesman from the GNAAS said two crews were called from Durham Tees Valley Airport and Langwathby at 10.45am.

One helicopter landed on the grass while the other landed at the scene as witnesses looked on.
One witness said: “A car was flipped over and had rolled into the bushes. The area was cordoned off by police.”

The road was closed from the junction with School Aycliffe Lane and motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible.

The road reopened later.

Sergeant Catherine Iley, of Durham Constabulary, said: “We would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision and in particular anyone who has dashcam footage to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to ring Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 0089 of April 1.
