TRESPASSERS on the railway between Darlington and Newcastle led to cancellations of rail services on Wednesday morning.

All lines have been reopened but commuters have been warned to expect delays and cancellations to some services.

Northern said: "Train services running through these stations (Darlington and Newcastle) are returning to normal but some services may still be cancelled or delayed.

"Emergency services are on site to deal with this."

"Road transport has been requested to run between Darlington and Newcastle (in this direction only).

"The first road transport will be on site in Darlington for 7.30am - this will be provided by Adamsons and Snowdens.

"Due to train crew and train displacement this will have an effect on the wider North-East network."

An LNER spokesperson said services were now able to run between Darlington and Newcastle but all services would be subject to residual delays following the earlier incident.

The disruption was expected to last until 9am.
