A BOY who was hit by a bus in a school car park on Monday remains in hospital, police have said.

The nine-year-old was involved in a 'collision' with a bus at the St Francis Xavier school in Richmond, North Yorkshire at around 3.30pm. 

He was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough in a serious, but non-life threatening condition.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "The pedestrian injured in the collision involving a bus at St Francis Xavier yesterday was a nine-year-old boy, he was taken to James Cook where he remains with serious but non-life-threatening injuries."

Stuart McGhee headteacher at St Francis Xavier School and Katie Whitehead headteacher of St Mary's Primary School, which remains on the same site, said: “We are a strong and caring school community and we are very much focussed on supporting the pupil, the family and the students, parents and staff who witnessed this incident.

“Any accident is very upsetting and at assemblies today we are making sure everyone knows there is professional help available if anyone would like it.

“We are also staying in touch with the family involved who are very much in our thoughts and keeping us updated on the pupil’s recovery.”

Stuart Carlton director of children and young people’s services at North Yorkshire County Council said: “This is a very upsetting accident for pupils, the family, the school community and the driver of the bus and our thoughts are with them all.

“We are offering a range of practical support including counselling to help those who may benefit from it - we wish the pupil well in his continued recovery.”
