MORE THAN 64,000 tickets for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Middlesbrough have officially sold out in just 100 minutes after going on sale.

Tickets were released at 5pm on Thursday night ahead of the huge show featuring world-renowned artists coming to perform in the region in May.

Around 32,000 tickets were on offer for each day of the Big Weekend on Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26.

Residents living in the area served by Middlesbrough Council enjoyed first reserve of the tickets. A second “pot” of tickets were allocated for residents across the wider Tees Valley area, including Darlington Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees.

A third pot of tickets were unreserved and on offer to music fans from across the country.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James said: “I think this is the most exciting line up we’ve ever had for a Big Weekend and it seems the people of Middlesbrough agree as it’s sold out so quickly. Bring on May.”

The line-up for the weekend features international and British artists who will perform in Middlesbrough’s Stewart Park, including Miley Cyrus, The 1975, Stormzy, Little Mix, Mumford and Sons, Catfish and The Bottlemen, Ellie Goulding and Charli XCX.

Saltburn-born artist James Arthur will also be performing on Teesside turf on Saturday, May 25.

A handful of tickets for the event will be released to Radio 1 listeners throughout the week.
