A POPULAR weekly gathering for keen runners took another big stride forward at the weekend.

Despite the nippy conditions, the Hackworth Park Run in Shildon celebrated its sixth anniversary, with a bumper turn-out of 125, compared to the usual average of about 60 runners.

The milestone was a good reason for a celebration, as the hardy band of event volunteers mounted a marquee and laid on plenty of cake for finishers completing the three laps of the park.

Event directors Neil and Diane Wood thanked all the helpers who lend a hand each Saturday morning.

“Each park run has its own distinct feel and we could not stage it each week without our volunteers,” said Mr Wood, who hopes for another big field for the 300th running, on April 13.
