A NINETY year-old ‘old boy’ has praised the unity of music as school children joined together in song.

Old Barnardian Dr Desmond Walker joined invited guests and dignitaries as the combined chapel and harmony choirs of Barnard Castle School, County Durham, performed Evensong with the choir of Aysgarth School, North Yorkshire, in the inspirational surroundings of Durham Cathedral.

Dr Walker, who attended Barnard Castle School from 1940 to 1946, said: “Evenings like this are very special indeed.

“I attended Barnard Castle School throughout the war years so musical events like this were very few and far between.

“It is wonderful to be able to come to such a splendid building as Durham Cathedral to see two schools join together on such a magnificent evening for both communities.”

The evening formed part of the Durham Vocal Festival, which celebrates the finest vocals locally, nationally and internationally.

Also in attendance were Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham Sue Snowdon, Rev (Sqd Ldr) David Haslam and Col Andy Hadfield.

The choir was conducted by Barnard Castle School’s director of music Simon Dearsley accompanied by the Prep School director of music Robin Harrison.

Barnard Castle School headmaster Tony Jackson added: “It is humbling and, at the same time as a teacher, inspirational to listen to the unbridled talent of our young people singing together in such a magnificent setting as Durham Cathedral.

“It is always a pleasure to work with other schools in the region and see how quickly the young people combine their efforts thanks to a common love of music.”
