JET skiers who ride too close to bathers at Saltburn are to be put under the spotlight.

Calls have been made to come up with new rules to deal with riders who ride too close to swimmers.

Cllr Bob Norton, Redcar and Cleveland Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, raised the issue at the end of Thursday’s meeting of the council’s Economic Growth Scrutiny and Improvement Committee.

“I’m merely making a request,” he said addressing committee chair, Cllr Wayne Davies.

“There has been some conversation going on for a while at Saltburn in relation to jet skis and the way that these people operate in the water in close proximity to bathers.

“The ward councillors for Saltburn have been looking at that problem and following concerns from various people – I’ve been involved in that concern.

“I want to announce today that I have asked for a meeting with officers to set up a cross-party working group that will look at a foreshore safety policy extending from Cow Bar all the way to the South Gare where it meets PD Ports.

“I’d like you, if you would chair, to put that on your next agenda item, that is foreshore safety so that we can get it formally logged and we can get things moving along.

“I’d like the approval of the scrutiny committee to proceed with that.”

“Happy to have it on the agenda so long as we aren’t going to become killjoys,” replied Cllr Davies.

“Oh no, absolutely not,” said Cllr Norton.

“We don’t want to become a police state,” said Cllr Davies.

“The more liberties we take away from people, the more it just becomes a bit PC brigade.

“But I’m happy to look into that and we’ll put that on for next time round.”

The Economic Growth Scrutiny and Improvement Committee next meets on Thursday, April 11.
