A BREXIT themed exhibition featuring satirical images of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn is being launched this week.

Cruel Britannia is due to be held in 'Disgraceland' on Baker Street, Middlesbrough, known for hosting music events and pop-up displays.

Christopher Spencer, known as Cold War Steve, is famous for his photographic montages of celebrities such as Steve Mcfadden.

Jason Williamson, meanwhile, is from electronic punk band the Sleaford Mods. The artist and singer duo have come together to create the exhibition, which focuses on austerity and Brexit Britain.

Through the art, they aim to explore the myths of our times.

Said to be ‘brutal, bleak and angry,’ the exhibition features 15 placards and 15 photographs depicting the artists’ views of modern-day Britain. With Brexit on the horizon, Cold War Steve’s photomontages show a grim world full of politicians and world leaders. Jason’s placards are designed to look like those used in strikes.

Scrawled with messages such as ‘Silence of the grams,’ he has created a snapshot of how he sees the modern world in his work.

They have chosen Middlesbrough as a host due to its post-industrial roots and said it creates the perfect setting for their display.

Cold War Steve said of his art: “It’s a hellscape of a post-austerity, post-Brexit, fissured Britain. Featuring all the repulsive ghouls and bovine spivs responsible…and Sam Allardyce.”

The organisers have said the event offers something for everyone, from ‘disillusioned leavers, staunch remainers and everything in between’.

The curator, Mark Parham, said: “The arts have lost their voice but that’s about to change. Perfect venue, perfect town, perfect timing, it’s the most important exhibition in the country today.”

Jason Williamson added: “I’m hoping this survives the Middle Class Media vetting process when it comes to selecting works that try at least to communicate the stench of our times.”

Both artists have history in this area, and Cold War Steve’s first book, ‘The Festival of Brexit’ is due out in March.

The exhibition will be launching in Disgraceland for one week between March 8 and March 15, with the opening night running from 6pm to 8pm. Every other day, it will be open between 11am and 4pm.
