THE mewls of a lost kitten were all that saved tiny Blakey from certain death after he found his way into a bus depot.

Staff at the Portrack Lane Stagecoach depot in Stockton, Teesside, heard meowing from inside a pillar of the depot's bus wash area and managed to successfully coax the animal out of the mechanism.

Engineering supervisor Martin Finlayson, along with fueller and shunters Charles Benson, Matthew Richardson and Lewis Pape, handed Blakey over to the care of Cats Protection Teesside, who had him checked by vets.

There were concerns the kitten had ingested screen wash, which is toxic to animals, as his fur was dyed blue on contact. However, vets confirmed Blakey had escaped just in time.

Blakey will not be ready to be rehomed soon, however those interested in adoption can visit teesside.cats.org.uk

A JustGiving page has been set up to support Blakey's ongoing treatment and care.
