A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man who was injured in an assault last night died in hospital this afternoon.

At about 6.20pm on Thursday, police received a report that a man had been found injured outside The Chesterfield pub, on Elswick Road, in Newcastle.

Emergency services attended the scene and the 46-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A police spokesperson confirmed he passed away in hospital this afternoon.

Four people were arrested last night in connection with the incident and remain in police custody.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Ed Small, said: “Firstly I want to say that our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim at this difficult time.

“They are receiving support from trained family liaison officers and we would ask that their privacy is respected whilst police enquiries continue.

“Four people remain in custody but we do need anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information to get in touch with Northumbria Police."
