A CHILD and adult were taken to hospital after they were hit by a car outside Abbey Road School in Darlington.

The two people involved in the incident on Friday are a mother and her child, The Northern Echo understands.

Both were taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by ambulance. Their conditions are not yet known.

The road was blocked off by police and people were urged to stay away from the area.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Police are currently at the scene of a collision involving a young child and a car.

“It happened at around 3.40pm today on Abbey Road, in Darlington, outside the primary school. The fire service, paramedics and air ambulance were also called to the scene.

“The little boy was trapped under the car, but has since been freed.

“Abbey Road is closed between Carmel Road North and Neville Road.” 

A spokesperson for GNAAS confirmed they had been called at 3.40pm to a road traffic collision involving a child.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), said: "We were called at 3.34pm to reports of an adult and child pedestrian being hit by a car on Abbey Road.

"We sent two ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, and received support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"The adult and child were both transported to James Cook University Hospital by road."

One witness said he heard the air ambulance fly over while walking his dog.

He said: "I heard lots of noise - I heard the air ambulance fly over my house. I came out to the garden, I didn't know what was going on it was so low.

"I saw the helicopter was looking for somewhere to land. A lot of people were crying - I've never seen so many police and ambulances. It is very sad."

The road reopened later.
