RESIGNED Cleveland Chief Constable Mike Veale is being investigated over by the police watchdog over alleged discrimination, inappropriate behaviour towards colleagues, and unprofessional behaviour.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed today that it has begun an investigation into the conduct of the former Chief, who resigned two weeks ago.

The force's Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger referred the case to the IOPC on Thursday, January 17, the day before Mr Veale handed in his resignation.

Mr Coppinger's referral contained allegations that Mr Veale had 'behaved inappropriately and acted in a discriminatory manner'.

IOPC Regional Director Miranda Biddle said: “It is crucial that allegations of a serious nature are investigated thoroughly and independently.

"Mr Veale has been informed that we have started our investigation and we will contact him and other parties in due course, as part of our inquiries.

“We are at the very start of the process so it would not be appropriate for me to comment further, other than to reassure the public, and all those working at Cleveland Police, that we will handle this investigation both diligently and sensitively.

"This investigation will be managed by our team in Cardiff to provide additional independence from our regional structure."

Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger said: “I am aware that the IOPC will now be investigating these matters as the independent police standards watchdog.

“I welcome the swiftness of their decision as it provides clarity for all parties involved and I hope and expect that these matters will be looked into sensitively and thoroughly.

“My Office and Cleveland Police will provide any assistance required as part of the IOPC investigation.”
