THE police have come up with an inventive new way to reach out to their communities.

Officers are inviting residents to their very own ‘blue light’ café which will open in Spennymoor town centre next week.

Spennymoor Neighbourhood team will be joining forces with a number of partner agencies to provide drop-in advice sessions for local residents.

These will centre around topics that look to improve their physical, mental and financial wellbeing.

Talking about the project, PCSO Sam Stephenson from Spennymoor neighbourhood team said: “We recognise the need for having someone to talk to after the busy Christmas period, it’s common for people in the New Year to find themselves in financial difficulties and we often see a rise in people struggling with their mental health.

“That’s why we decided to open a café where people can come in, have a chat and seek some advice.”

The neighbourhood team will be taking over a premises located on Spennymoor High Street and will be opening it up to the public on January 28.

The café will also be taking nominations for ‘A star in Spenny’ - an award which will recognise local people that stand out.

This could be due to an act of kindness or bravery but all nominations will be accepted.

A box will be situated in the café where people can drop off their nomination.

Sergeant Mike Sammut, from Spennymoor neighbourhood team said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get advice from the experts who will be hosting surgeries around finance, mental health and physical well-being.

“My officers will also be out and about to provide a presence in the town centre throughout the week.

“Please drop in, have a chat and make use of the refreshments which have been kindly donated by our local Asda.”

The agencies that are taking part are: Livin Housing Ltd, Public Consultation, HOPE programme for drug and alcohol, HomeGroup, County Durham & Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, VIP?, Appleton Lodge for elderly services, Credit Union, Wellbeing practitioner, Donna Kelly and Durham Constabulary officers from the special branch, licensing, street triage team, and keep in the know.
