A MAN suffered seriously injuries after a car crashed into a building.

The accident happened on Wednesday near the Foss Barrier pumping station in York.

Emergency services were called to St Georges Field Car Park in Tower Street after a grey Ford left the road, ploughed through a metal safety barrier, across a grassy area and into a brick wall at the side of the Castle Mills pumping station.

The crash happened at about 11.30am, and North Yorkshire Police officers remained at the scene with paramedics until at least 1pm.

Police blocked traffic at Fishergate to allow the vehicle to be recovered from the scene of the crash, leading to heavy traffic in the area at about 2.30pm.

Although the vehicle was badly damaged, the wall was not.

A police spokeswoman said one man, believed to be the driver and sole occupant of the car was treated at the scene by paramedics.

She said: "The area is currently closed while the initial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is carried out."
