LIFEBOATMEN from the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat charity (RBRB) have fundraised almost £300 as they sent members down the second deepest mine in Europe.

Lifeboat members, who independently patrol a section of North Yorkshire coast, along with close cooperation with the RNLI and coastguard, embarked on the long journey down under at the ICL Boulby mine near Saltburn.

The men were escorted to the bottom which measures almost 1,400 meters, which is around 4,600 feet in depth.

It was part of the charity's annual fundraising weekend.

ICL Boulby vice president Andrew Fulton said: "This is an annual event at which we are always happy to help.

"The money goes towards meeting the running costs of the boat and for those of us who live and work on, or near, the coast know full well the value of the service they provide."

The Boulby mine features an underground laboratory which scientists are using to research 'Dark Matter'.

The charity praised staff at ICL Boulby for the donation.
