STUDENTS at a local sixth form have put together a series of performances and artwork to honour Holocaust Memorial Day.

The annual service, organised by Darlington group Celebrating Communities, will be held at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form on January 28 to remember those who were victim under Nazi prosecution in the Second World War.

For the first time the service will involve six students who visited Auschwitz on a trip before Christmas.

The group - Lucy Jameson, Kion Sharma, Ami Lavan, and Eleanor Wright - will talk about their experience visiting the Second World War camp and their hopes for the future while student Zainab Miah will read a poem and Joe Kearney will provide music.

A group of art foundation students have also put together a contemporary display reflecting on the wartime events through visual and audio installations.

The memorial service will be led by Shildon Methodist Minister, Rev Andrew Bryer, and will be attended by Darlington Mayor Cllr Veronica Copeland, her consort David, Deputy Chief Constable of Durham Police Joe Farrel, and Dominic Brown, Assistant Chief Fire officer.

During the Service candles will be lit to commemorate other genocides and atrocities that have occurred since the end of the Second World War.

The service is free entry and will be held at 7pm at the sixth form. Refreshments will be available.
