A COUPLE are seeking retrospective planing approval for the fruit and vegetable garden they created at their Lake District home.

David and Alison Atherton, of Low Fold, Outgate, near Ambleside, told the Lake District National Park Authority they were led to believe they did not need permission for the change of use from farmland.

In planning documents, they explained they are "keen gardeners" and they hope to become self-sufficient at the rural property.

They bought an extra strip of land with home-grown produce in mind, and also planned a "bee-friendly" wild meadow.

However, two people have expressed concerns to planners over the project.

A neighbour said the aim of self-sufficiency was to be applauded but items such as meshing, fruit cages and climbing frames for peas and beans may have an impact on the area's "natural beauty".

Meanwhile, a visitor from Liverpool has complained about loss of views.
