BLACKBURN (4-3-3): Raya 5; Bennett 6, LENIHAN 7, Nyambe 6, Bell 5; Reed 7 (Dack 78, 6), Smallwood 6 (Rothwell 103, 5), Travis 6; Armstrong 6 (Nuttall 73, 6), Graham 6, Brereton 7 (Conway 64, 5). Subs: Leutwiler (gk), Butterworth, Grayson.

NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-1-4-1):

6 Woodman: Made a couple of routine stops and will be frustrated to have been beaten by Armstrong;

6 Sterry: Looked neat and tidy on the ball even if he was unable to track Armstrong for his goal

6 Fernandez: Had defended reasonably well but then just as guilty as the rest for allowing Rovers back in

5 Clark: Had started brightly enough before then being part of a defence that let Blackburn back in before going off

5 Manquillo: Didn’t do enough in either direction to impress down the left after a positive opening 15 minutes;

7 SCHAR: Surprised to see him line up where he did despite previous outings there and then switched after the injuries;

6 Murphy: Made a lovely run and cross for Roberts’ goal which was more than he did in the first meeting

6 Longstaff: Looked to get on the ball and was clearly delighted to see his early effort fly in

7 Roberts: An assist and a goal is not a bad way to mark your full debut for the Magpies

5 Ritchie: Not as influential as he needed to be to help out Newcastle

5 Joselu: Did nothing to threaten the Blackburn goal until having a strong penalty shout waved away and hitting the third

Subs:

Lascelles (for Clark 46): Hardly had a touch but almost cost his team a goal while playing on through injury. 4

Hayden (for Lascelles 56): Nodded a corner against the post. 6

Perez (for Roberts 94): Got involved in extra-time and scored. 6

Atsu (for Ritchie 109)

(not used): Harker (gk), Rondon, Yedlin.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Fabian Schar – impressed in both roles he played and had a hand in the crucial third for Newcastle.
