AN EVIL Minion is the latest addition to a growing display of scrap metal sculptures in the front garden of a County Durham home.

The purple creature sitting atop a lamppost has been installed alongside a giant scorpion, a 7ft Alien-meets-Predator creature and its baby.

John MacMurray’s latest work of art hails from Illumination and Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me franchise.

Inspired by his great-granddaughter Niah’s love of the animated characters, the 54-year-old had already made and sold half a dozen Minions before moving onto his latest creation.

Mr MacMurray, of Ash Grove, in Shildon, said: “I’ve done that many for different people I decided to do the monster one.

“They (Minions) drink this juice and turn into a monster.

"Keeping in with the monster theme I thought I would do one for the kids.”

The care home maintenance worker made the 3ft sculpture in just one week before welding it on top of a Victorian style lamppost he made 25 years ago - when he first started to get into the hobby.

Mr MacMurray made waves earlier this year his first major creation, the scrap-metal alien and its baby, became somewhat of a tourist attraction in the town.

Shortly after he was approached by Sky who wanted to document the making of his giant scorpion, unveiled this month, for the next series of Scrap Kings, set to be aired on Quest this summer.

Mr MacMurray is by no means finished with his display and is already planning his next builds.
