A MAN was left with significant facial injuries following an unprovoked assault in a County Durham market town.

Bishop Auckland Police are appealing for information following the incident which took place along the A688 bypass at St Helen Auckland, in West Auckland, at about 8.45pm on Sunday, December 23.

A police spokesman said: "It is believed the victim was travelling along the road when a blue BMW and a white pickup truck boxed in the vehicle causing it to come to a stop.

"An unknown male then approached the victim’s vehicle and punched him to the face causing significant facial injuries which required hospital treatment.

"Both vehicles then made off in an unknown direction."

Officers are now appealing for anyone who may have seen either of these vehicles in the area at the time of the assault, to call them with information on 101 quoting reference number 361 of December 23.
