The incident took place at about 5.40am close to the A684 junction.

Police closed the road for a few hours due to debris on the northbound carriageway and to allow emergency services to deal with the incident.

They then reopened one lane before the road was reopened completely by the Highways Agency just before lunchtime.

The drivers, both male and the only occupants of the vehicles, were taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with non life-threatening injuries.

Sgt Paul Cording of North Yorkshire Police wrote on Twitter: "Apologies if you were caught up in the tailback on the #A19 Northbound at #Ellerbeck earlier. Drivers of the tractor & minibus both taken to hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries. Traffic will still be heavy in the area whilst the complex recovery takes place."

Queuing traffic built up along the A19 during rush-hour south of the incident which was between the A684 junction at Ellerbeck and the A172 Cleveland Tontine junction.
