PLANS to introduce parking regulations in a seaside town have resurfaced after original proposals to charge motorists were dropped after an angry backlash from residents and businesses.

A three-hour maximum stay is among new measures being proposed by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council in a bid to improve the parking in Saltburn, east Cleveland.

The proposals also include introducing a limited waiting period Monday to Sunday between 9am and 5pm to assist with visitor parking provision that is currently occupied by commuters on Milton Street, Dundas Street East and West.

There are also plans to introduce seasonal limited waiting on Marine Parade, between May 1 and September 30 between 9am to 5pm for a maximum of four hours, as well as the introduction of yellow lines in certain areas to promote improved parking.

Back in 2013, Redcar council was inundated with more than 2,000 objections to its proposals to impose parking charges in areas of the town, with fears that businesses would be hit as a result.

A council consultation found 2,086 out of 2,100 people surveyed, more than 99 per cent, were against the fees.

The new proposals do not include plans for parking charges, with the council opting for parking limits.

Those living in Saltburn have previously warned parking regulations will force even more of the day visitors to park in residential areas

A Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council spokesperson said: “These are proposals which are going out for consultation and no decision will be reached until after the consultation.

“We would encourage as many responses from residents as possible for feedback so a decision can be made.

“These proposals do not include plans to introduce additional parking charges or resident-only parking.

“The proposals include introducing limited waiting, which means cars can only park for three hours out-of-season, and four hours during the summer months, as well as yellow lines in certain areas to promote improved parking.

“Over the years, the council has received a number of complaints that have included issues about congestion and inconsiderate parking in Saltburn.

“In particular, issues such as the bottleneck at Marine Parade West, commuters parking in front of businesses in the town centre throughout the day, and hazardous parking between Cat Nab Car Park and Clifton.”

The official consultation over the parking regulation plans closes on February 4.
