A MAN accused of taking drugs into a women’s prison refused to leave his cell for his court appearance.
Stephen McCabe is accused of trying to pass various class C drugs on to an inmate during a visit to Low Newton Prison, Durham, on April 14 last year.
When approached by suspicious prison staff he was said to have attempted to swallow some drugs and ‘plug’ others by placing them in his anus, but 18 pills were recovered by prison staff.
The defendant, 32, of Flodden Road, Sunderland, was recalled to prison after his arrest to complete a previous prison sentence.
He was to have appeared via video link from Holme House Jail in Stockton to Durham Crown Court on a charge of conveying a prohibited item into prison, but refused to leave his cell to appear in the link booth, and so Judge Christopher Prince adjourned the case for a month.
