A MAN has been arrested after a "serious incident" at a Darlington town centre property left a woman dead and another man in hospital.

The woman, who has not yet been named, was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital on Saturday evening but was pronounced dead shortly after. Her cause of death is not yet known.

The Northern Echo:

Another man was taken to James Cook Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Durham Police confirmed they had launched an investigation into the incident, which happened at a property on Yarm Road in Darlington.

The force also confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, and that it is not linked to any ongoing traveller feud.

Officers from the force's crime scene investigation unit appeared later on Sunday morning to carry out their work, with particular focus on a number of rubbish bins that were located between the police cordon.

The Northern Echo:

Yarm Road, one of the main routes into Darlington town centre, remained closed between St Johns Crescent and Wesley Street throughout yesterday, as shocked and concerned neighbours gathered outside the police cordon to try and find out what had happened.

The police cordon also extended to the back alleys behind properties on both sides of Yarm Road.

Neighbours said they had heard sirens from the emergency services during the night and the police had remained on scene throughout the night and Sunday.
