HOMELESS people and survivors of domestic abuse have benefited from the generosity of a women’s club.

This festive season saw members of Pimm’s and Needles inundate good causes around Darlington with donations of gifts, clothes, toiletries and food.

Before Christmas, founders Charlotte Pyrah and Donna Feeney made an appeal for donations to those who attend the ten Pimm’s and Needles social groups that are held regularly across the region.

Their 600-strong army of kind-hearted members rose to the challenge and helped the pair to fill carloads of items in the hope of helping people in need.

Initially, the intention had been to make a donation to refuges in Darlington and the Wear Valley that offer help and support to those who have experienced domestic abuse.

However, the response to the charitable appeal was so great that Ms Pyrah and Ms Feeney were able to also take surplus donations to Mangobean.

The Darlington café opened its doors to the community and served a communal meal on Christmas Day, also offering free haircuts and donations of food and other goods to those who were in need.

Ms Pyrah said: “We hope that we have made a difference to a few people’s lives this Christmas.

“We have been amazed by the kindness and generosity of our members and would like to thank them all for their support.”

Pimm’s and Needles is a community interest group that was launched in Darlington and now holds regular events and meetings for women around the region.

It recently secured funding that will enable its work with socially isolated, disabled, ill and elderly women to continue for another year. Members enjoy socialising through a range of activities and events, from baking to chocolate making and crafting.
