THE Natural History Museum’s beloved Dippy the Diplodocus is coming to the region, with advance booking strongly advised for the free attraction.

Following visits to Dorchester, Birmingham, Belfast and Glasgow, the iconic skeleton cast will be at the Great North Museum in Newcastle from May 18 to October 6.

Dippy lived in London for over 100 years but now he’s on an adventure around the UK to inspire families about biodiversity and the wonders of the natural world.

The Diplodocus was cast from the type specimen found in America and unveiled to the British public in 1905.

The full skeleton is 21.3 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 4.25 metres high.

When it was unveiled to the public in 1905, the Diplodocus became a star, and has since featured in newspaper cartoons, news reports and even played starring roles in film and television.

The Museum announced that Dippy would be replaced by a blue whale skeleton.

Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure has been organised by the Natural History Museum in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation.
