VANDALS have targeted a South Durham primary school's remembrance garden.

Staff at Oakley Cross Primary School, in West Auckland, discovered one of the garden's perimeter posts had been yanked from the ground, when they returned to school this morning.

Work on the garden is not yet complete but staff said they were extremely disappointed and upset to find the damage.

A statement on the school's Facebook page said: "As work continues on our special remembrance garden, it was shocking and disappointing to discover that one of the posts has already been damaged over the weekend.

"It is a shame that somebody in the local area is choosing to act in this way and shows a total lack of respect.

"Continued acts will be forwarded to the police."
