A MAN is due to appear in court today after being charged with a terror offence following police investigation in Newcastle.

The 33-year-old man has been charged with engaging in the preparation of an act of terrorism following his arrest on Tuesday.

The man is from the Arthur's Hill area of the city.

The man was arrested during a police operation in Arthur's Hill, Newcastle on Tuesday

He will appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court today.

It follows an investigation by Counter Policing North East, supported by Northumbria Police.

Chief Superintendent Neil Hutchison, the local policing lead for Newcastle, said: “We recognise that the activity in the past week will have caused some concern and unavoidable disruption to the communities we serve.

“We want to thank you wholeheartedly for your patience and understanding. Residents in Arthur’s Hill have been very engaging with the neighbourhood officers on patrol in the area.

“Those officers will continue to patrol the area over the weekend to speak to anyone who has concerns and if you do have any questions we would encourage you to approach them.

“We will continue to work closely with our colleagues in Counter Terrorism Policing North East to keep our communities safe. Our main priority will always be public safety and protecting the people of Northumbria.
