COUNCIL chiefs have pledged to look at ways of making it easier to move around a city's packed Christmas markets amid fears it is becoming a victim of it's own success.

The move comes after concerns over safety at the York Christmas Markets with worries from some residents about the danger of people being crushed or trampled.

Council leaders say they will be investigating but revealed that while many high streets are struggling York is bucking the trend with an increase of 3 per cent in footfall compared to a 3.5 per cent drop across many other city and town centres according to the British Retail Consortium. Officers are being asked to look at how it can be made easier for people to move around the market particularly at peak times.
